The Facebook Opportunity - For e-marketing class

The Facebook Opportunity - David F. Carr, Forbes.com

This article touches on several different aspects of Facebook marketing. The good: Companies are able to learn more about their clients and send more relevant information to them. The bad: Like pop-up ads, there is a fear that targeted marketing could begin to have a negative view by consumers. The ugly: Many are begining to revolt against the processes Facebook uses insisting it is intrusive and puts their privacy at risk (I smell lawsuits).

As Facebook grows, new ways to make money off it emerge everyday. If your company relies solely on Facebook for its business, like Zynga, if your company is new to Facebook and using it for marketing like Ford, or if they are just using it check the backgrounds of potential employees like KPMG UK, money can be made, or saved using this technology.

So how are companies benefiting? Entrepreneur.com has gone ahead and outlined the top 10 Ways a Facebook Fan Page Helps Your Business. In this article you will see several obvious ways such as "strengthen customer relations," to less obvious things like "improve SEO (search engine optimization.)"

If the ten profit increasing and customer satisfaction targets in the article aren't enough, employers are also looking to save money when hiring using Facebook. As CollegeRecruiter.com outlines, employers are doing background checks before and after interview candidates. Employers are able to use a simple cost of turnover calculation to figure out cost of hiring the wrong person for a job. Using Facebook as an addition and free background check, they could increase the chances of hiring the right person, or better yet, not hiring the wrong person.

It's easy to the benefits Facebook brings to the business world, however, sometimes the dangers are not so easy to measure. Facebook has openly admitted to security breaches where personal information was compromised. Yahoo News write an article about Facebook refusing to change some securty policies in response to protests by Privacy Groups that have sprung up all over Facebook. These negative views have potential to hurt business that do business on and/or with Facebook. However, the negative impact at this point is too small to measure.

So, it is safe to say that Facebook can be your best friend, or your worst enemy. Depending on how you use it, and how much your business relies on it, you may see great fortune, or, with trend changes, great defeat. It is important to stay with the times and understand that Facebook evolves more each day and needs constant attention and adaptation.
